Ortona
Situated on the Adriatic coast, Ortona has almost 24,000 inhabitants. It has a busy port and some very famous historic buildings such as the Cathedral which contains the remains of the Apostle San Tommaso, the Aragonese Castle dating back to the fifteenth century and the building Palazzo Farnese founded by Princess Margaret of Austria, today home of the Cascella picture gallery. The "Battle Museum" holds a collection of memoirs of the battle between the German troops and the Allies, in and around Ortona during the second World War. Due to the great losses of lives plus the destruction of the town, Ortona was awarded a gold medal for bravery in peacetime. Ortona can be reached via rail (Adriatic line) or by road (A14 motorway).
